Keeping Your Chimney in good working order is very important, to be able to enjoy your Fireplace for many years. Masonry Chimney  can last for hundreds of years if they are maintained.  As a Seattle Masonry Contractor we repair  quite a few Fireplace every year, here are some points to consider in the maintenance of your Chimney.  Our Chimneys are a lot like us, they do well when we feed them right.  Always burn clean dry wood, green or wet wood will build up creosote in the Flue Liners and that can lead to a Chimney Fire.  When burning any wood don't restrict the airflow all the time every so often open the air flow and burn a good hot fire for a while.  This will burn off some of the creosote build up, thus a safer Chimney.  Next have your Fireplace Cleaned and inspected by a certified Masonry Professional ever year.  Summer is a good time of year to do this, it's easy to see any damage that might have accrued the winter before and a good time to make any needed repairs that need done this year.   Brick Tuckpointing can be cleaned and sealed better at this time of year, then when it's winter.
